The Program
Ages:
The Academy is open to children 5–15 years of age.
All students are to meet at the Block Island Maritime Institute, 216 Ocean Avenue.
Directions from Old Harbor: From the ferry, take a right onto Water Street and follow all the way to Beach Street. Take a right on Beach Street and then a quick left onto Ocean Avenue. We are on the right, down the hill before Dead Eye Dick’s Restaurant. Transportation to the fishing sites will be
provided by The Academy.
Students should wear beach attire. Sunscreen application prior to arriving at the BIMI departure location is encouraged.
Proper Behavior:
We want each child to have the best fishing experience possible. Children should behave in a manner that does not impede the learning experience of others.
Release Form:
A parent or guardian must complete a liability release form, before any student may join The Academy.
Students will practice:
Correct rod, reel, and line selection
Casting technique
Rigging and knot tying
Fishing with bait and lures
Fish fighting skills
Fish handling
Fish that might be caught include:
Fluke (summer flounder)
Sea Bass
Striped Bass
Blue Fish
Large Mouth Bass
Pickerel
Blue Gill
Perch
